In growing and/or mature pigs, the symptoms are less severe with a low mortality rate. This disease is only infection to swine and poses no threat to humans as it does not enter the food supply chain.

African swine fever is caused by a very contagious virus and is killing pigs and wild boars in Africa, Asia and parts of Europe. Although humans cannot be infected with African swine fever, they are the most likely source of introducing the virus into Canada through contaminated meat products, clothing and footwear. Biosecurity is key to keep diseases away from the Canadian pig population.
