Ground Pork Shepherd's Pie ☘️🍀
Ingredients
Filling:
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 large onion chopped
- 2 carrots diced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 lb ground Johnston’s pork 900g
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup vegetable broth
- 1 cup stout beer
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- ½ tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup mixed frozen veggies optional
For the mashed potato topping:
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and diced 900g
- 4 tbsp butter
- ¼ cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Start by making the mashed potato topping. Place the diced potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Mash the potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and carrots and cook until softened about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground pork to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, stout, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend together. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Stir in the frozen veggies and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Transfer the pork mixture to your baking dish and spread it out evenly.
- Spoon the mashed potatoes over the pork mixture, spreading them out with a spatula. Or using a piping bag for an added design to the top!
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the mashed potatoes are golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Enjoy!

Do I have to use beer
Hello! You can replace beer with chicken stock if you prefer!
Can I make a half recipe by just cutting all the ingredient quantities in half?
Yes! You can absolutely halve it and it will still turn out great 👍 Just keep the ratios the same and use a smaller baking dish.
This was delicious. I used what i had so I chopped up a bell pepper, onion. I didnt have carrots. I used instant mashed potatoes. I didnt have beer so I used a half cup beef broth and 1 1/2 cup chicken broth. I used frozen peas. It came out amazing!
We love this! 🙌 That’s exactly what cooking is about — making it work with what you have. The bell pepper and onion sound like great additions, and your broth swap was a smart move. So glad it turned out amazing for you! Thanks for sharing your tweaks!
